Crear y Comunicar

Photos taken by students in Rosa Grande and Pittsburgh (2012 and 2011)

Juntos (formerly SIFE:Nicaragua), a student group at Carnegie Mellon University, facilitated an art exchange between communities in Rosa Grande, Nicaragua and Pittsburgh, USA. Our goal was for students to develop visual skills that also serve as tools for self-inquiry and community reflection, and to showcase the accomplishments and insights of children in both locations. I was responsible for leading curriculum development, outreach, travel and event logistics, and exhibition installation from 2011 to 2012.

In 2010, the group led art and photography workshops in Rosa Grande with local elementary school students and exhibited the work there. Building off of the Rosa Grande series, Juntos then partnered with the Homewood YCMA in Pittsburgh to hold photography workshops with a group of elementary and middle school students from 2010 to 2012.

Juntos collaborated with maker space Assemble to exhibit the resulting photos from Rosa Grande and Pittsburgh, and hold a series of weekend art workshops that were free and open to the public in 2012. The opening night was part of the Unblurred Gallery Art Crawl.
